The West Indies have announced a squad for the four-Test series against England, and it includes the magnificent Darren Julius Garvey Sammy, a 23 year-old all-rounder from St Lucia. DJ, who played a season at Barnes CC in London, has been included in the squad at the expense of Marlon Samuels. Following the retirement of Brian Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan has taken on what Tony Cozier calls the “most hazardous job in West Indies cricket… its pressures have been so great that they forced Richie Richardson and Brian Lara to take a break from the game, the former to recover from the stress-induced condition ‘acute fatigue syndrome’ the latter to ‘seek the assistance of appropriate professionals’.”Being captain of the Windies is a maddening job!

Great news for the DJ, when he played at Barnes he was a skint teenager on the MCC ground staff. He has now started to make a decent living from the game and it is great to see him doing well. Here’s hoping he has a fantastic series for the Windies, but that England triumph!
